PRIME has partnered with Leicester Medical School and CMF Kenya to provide an online medical elective addressing global health, as an alternative to overseas travel. The programme for this course was developed and piloted in 2021 and the student feedback was universally positive. As a result all parties are keen to repeat the programme twice during 2022.
Aims of Project:
To enable students to experience cross-cultural learning and work
To introduce medical students to PRIME teaching methods and whole person medicine
To enable students to learn about global health issues and how they might contribute over the course of their careers
Programme Strands:
Global Health Topics
Whole Person Medicine and Teaching Skills
Careers in Global Health
A team of facilitators is needed to further develop the teaching material and to facilitate the courses. In depth knowledge of global health is not needed. It is hoped that the course will be run twice in 2022, with different sets of students each time.
Teaching is online (home-based) delivered by a team of PRIME Tutors supported by some guest speakers. It will probably take place over several afternoons, with timing dependent on overseas partners. Tutors will not necessarily be needed for every session and how to cover each teaching session will be discussed as a team; if you are able to attend the majority of sessions in one or other block as this would aid continuity.
Learning styles include online lectures, tutorials, small group work and mini projects or case studies.
Students will have buddies from an overseas medical school to learn with.
Particular Skills needed:
Ability to collaboratively facilitate teaching sessions for students from diverse backgrounds
Ability to teach others about teaching and to provide feedback to students undertaking teaching sessions
Availability for either Block One 9th May to 27th May and/or Block Two 30th May to 17th June
Previous experience of working/teaching overseas would be ideal, as students are keen to see how global health can fit with a UK-based medical career
Expressions of interest by 31st December - Please indicate teaching Block 1 or 2 or both
